Fall Music Clinics & Volunteer Training
Date: Mon, Sep. 28, 2009
SilenceIsViolence announces two important events this week:
First, this Tuesday evening our Fall Music Clinics series begins under the direction of Music Director Shamarr Allen. These clinics meet every Tuesday through November from 5:30 to 7:30PM at Sound Cafe (2700 Chartres Street). They include musical instruction on a range of instruments for kids ages 4-15; dinner; and a chance to connect with positive role models in the New Orleans music industry. The Clinics are completely free, thanks to support from the Threadheads, the Musicians Assistance Fund, and individual donors. We still need dinners for some evenings and contributions to maintain the instruments, so please help if you can! Contact Kendra Reade (504-722-0908) with questions or assistance.
Then, on Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 7PM we will hold a volunteer training session for the Victim Allies Project, an advocacy effort that works for respect for victims of violence and their families within the criminal justice system. VAP works by pairing volunteers with individual victims to work together as a team. The project is gaining momentum among victims' rights and support groups, and we are in need of volunteers to answer the calls for support. Please call Denise Obst (504-390-8245) to sign up for the training, which will cover the criminal justice system as well as emotional and psychological concerns when dealing with victims of violence. The training will be held across the street from Sound Cafe, at 2701 Chartres Street. Light refreshments will be provided.
The community's support and engagement is what makes these projects work. Please watch our website for more details on both the Music Clinics and the Victim Allies Project, and for more community-led efforts toward peace throughout the Fall.
